Europe@feddit.org•Sweden Gives Ukraine 16 Gripens, Plans Sale of 22 More Jets Armed With Long-Range MissilesEnglish
6·5 days agoApparently they’re hoping to deliver the first jets in December/January, so in about 6 months. From what I gather they’re buying the E/F variant (latest version) which will be delivered in 2030, but as soon as the deal is finalised they’ll get the 16 free C/D (previous version).
Sweden is currently upgrading its fleet from C/D to E/F, with the first one delivered in October 2025.

14·5 days agoFairly well. They have different strengths and weaknesses. The Gripen is designed to work with a minimal crew on dispersed airstrips. 500-1000m straight road is a runway for it. It’s designed to fight Russia, so it should be a good fit for Ukraine.

Europe@feddit.org•Sweden bans marriage between cousins and other close relativesEnglish
43·6 days agoNot sure that this is a good idea. I believe that this is to placate the populists who the government depends on.
On the other hand see the problem with forced marriages in certain cultures so I’m conflicted.

Europe@feddit.org•Scottish Parliament endorses SNP call for independence referendumEnglish
5·7 days agoIt’s not my place to say what the Scots should or should not do, but if you think Brexit was messy, separating Scotland and England will be several times worse. That said, I’d happily accept Scotland into the Nordics, together with Estonia, I feel we share a lot of the same values and culture.

Bad sources and propaganda should get voted down IMHO, not articles from good enough sources, no matter how much you don’t like the content.

5·9 days agoThere are nicotine pouches that’s not currently banned in all EU counties which is the same thing for all practical purposes. I believe France banned them in February though.
However, there’s a discussion on the effectiveness on those pouches as a means of quitting cigarettes , since the reduction in smoking by women (who traditionally don’t use snus) seems to have happened before the nicotine pouches were introduced.

15·12 days agoI had the idea years ago that we should ban notes outright, it would have to be coins and the highest denomination would be €50. You can still buy stuff that you’d need cash for, but it would make the black/shadow-economy more cumbersome. Or you’d get really strong criminals. 🙃

22·13 days agoGet better cops? I might not trust every cop out there, but I trust that the system will hold them to the standard that we require from them. So far it seems to work here in the Nordics.

22·13 days agoYeah, that was my point? The laws apply, but you will never have to think about them.

Ireland already joined. Scotland can’t since they’re not a sovereign nation. Might be one if the SNP get their way though.
edit: if, not of, bloody autocorrect.
