Has anyone else played this one?

I’ve played through the first four episodes this week while I’m on vacation, and I don’t think the writing in a game has punched me in the gut to this extent since Bioshock or Dragon Age: Origins. (Though Detroit: Become Human is a close equivalent.)

I’m just blown away by the writing.

I played the original. It’s a good game. Incredibly interesting story. Lots of emotions, characters well thought out. I’m just terrible at finishing any game, so I never got far.

I didn’t like how they replaced the “snap a quick pic” mechanic with a “sit down and pres a button over and over again to draw a scene” aspect of the second one, but the stories have all been good.

The twist in the first game where

          Tap for spoiler

your favorite teacher teacher turned out to have a torture/rape dungeon

was insane though. Definitely threw me through a loop.

The writing is by far the best, too. It’s a bit cringe in a clever, “yeah, I was definitely cringe in high school too” kinda way. No super painful moments, just fun/funny and sometimes mega dark. The games get more and more painful as they go on… the second game was blah, true colors was mostly pretty painful dialogue- and story-wise, and Bloom and Rage was hilariously bad, like comically horribly bad. All of the characters were horribly written and had insanely bad dialogue.

I really need to play Before the Storm! I’d also happily replay the first game… I played it near when it came out, with my partner. We both really enjoyed it.

Before the Storm is probably the least bad out of all of them, but probably because it wasn’t made by Dontnod IIRC.

But really thats just calling it the shiniest of the turds, or first place loser. LiS has never matched the peak of the original game.

I first played the original up to a critical point where failing leads to a certain character’s death. I KNEW the right response but mis-clicked and had the outcome I was trying to avoid. I put the game down for months and didn’t come back to it until after a big break-up. I played again from the start, got the good outcome for that conversation, then was an emotional wreck after beating the game. I’ve got fanart of Max on the wall right next to me because that was one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time.

Still haven’t finished Before the Storm though. I get a little sad any time Chloe talks and it’s not Ashly Burch’s voice.

Are we talking about the original Life is Strange? The thumbnail shows the newest game, Reunion, but I’ll assume that’s their website being dumb and we’re talking about the original. I absolutely loved it when I played it years ago, and I loved the way it made me feel powerless when my powers suddenly didn’t work. Like with Kate… I didn’t pay attention to or help her the first time I played, and I eventually replayed the game just to change that. If you haven’t played chapter 5 yet, you’re in for a treat.

I want to play through it again and 100% it at some point. Though to be honest, idk if that will ever happen, I suck at finishing new games let alone ones I already know the ending to. Maybe I’ll give the remastered version a shot or something. There’s several other games in the series, and aside from True Colors and Reunion, which I have not played, I enjoyed them all to some extent, though not as much as the original.

The link is to the square enix LiS page, but yes, talking about the first one. (Didn’t link to the Wikipedia or anything else in order to avoid any spoilers.)

      It blew my mind.

I adore this game. I regularly get out to that crucial bench and its lovely environs quite often.

If you get out to Arcadia Bay (known in real life as Tillamook Bay, Garibaldi, Oceanside, and Cape Meares), you’ll find… signs.

The game and story is incredibly unique. I definitely got emotional towards the end and still have Life is Strange 2 on my “must play” list. Can definitely recommend it for people who enjoy story games and the choices within it that affect the outcome. The thing with rewinding time and such and the plot connection with the storm is also really well made. The choice towards the end was a though one to make at all though.

LiS2 made me really sad, like really really sad. I thought the brother, Daniel, was annoying, but perhaps playing as Sean put a soft spot in my heart for him. Just trying to protect his super brother as his normal brother, AND THE INSTRUMENTALS ARE INSANE(ly sad)

Yup. The Max stories have been the best ones. The character writing remains strong in this one after Double Exposure, but the game loses track of some of its own time travel rules, and the actions that determine your ending could have been telegraphed better.

The original is great. Its the only one that exists IMO.

All the other games in the series are horrendously bad. The developers made one good game and never matched it.

The first was pretty widely regarded as a great game. But most people agree that the rest are trash. The company made one good game, and then never managed to match it.

Your homework for today is to see a post from someone talking about something they like and resist the urge to immediately shit on it. :)

You not liking something doesn’t make it bad. Some things just are not for you, and that’s okay.

      Cheers.

That’s unnecessarily condescending, they weren’t shitting on the first game.

The rest of their games ranged from “meh” to “holy fuck this is terrible” (bloom and rage) but the first game was genuinely fun and enjoyable.

The original game was great, I have played the demos of 2 but it didn’t felt the same.

If you like emotional stories and have a webcam, I STRONGLY recommend Before your eyes, I got emotional playing life is strange, I outright cried playing Before your eyes. I think the gimmick of having to blink to interact makes you more involved as you struggle to keep your eyes open for some scenes.

      I’ll check it out.

While technically a horror game, ‘Among The Sleep’ is a good one if you’re into more emotional stories. You play as a child and his teddy bear, who in his fantasy world, has become animated.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the first couple, and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a really beautiful little thing that ties in to Life Is Strange 2, but stands on its own nicely.

LiS2 didn’t touch me as much as the first, and :Before the Storm, but it’s still enjoyable enough. I haven’t played True Colors though.
