I understand on the genetics part it’s not a good idea to create offspring between two blood related individuals. But ‘family’ is not always blood related. If there would be true love between two cousins who are not blood related, should it not be allowed?

It starts to get morally really complicated: If offspring with gene mutations is the reason for this ban:

      • What about gay marriages?
      • What about people where one partner is infertile?
      • There are people around who are known to have gene defects that will affect their offspring. Should they be banned from marriage? Banned from having children? How to enforce such a ban? That really will end with forced sterilization

If something else is the reason, like “I don’t like it” or “there are many forced marriages” or “I don’t like Arabs”, that’s another thing. If you want to go against forced marriages, that ban won’t work. If you just don’t like arabs, that totally is your issue

If they are not blood related couldn’t one of them request emancipation from the family, and then marry?

Even if there’s no blood relation, the intent is not specially common, and there’s probably more cases of abuse than real love between non blood related half siblings. I only have anecdotal data to support my claims, but I’m not voting so I don’t really need to inform myself in it. Idk.

Not sure that this is a good idea. I believe that this is to placate the populists who the government depends on.

On the other hand see the problem with forced marriages in certain cultures so I’m conflicted.

Yes you can only marry one person at a time, not both your cousin and another close relative.
I think most countries have this law.
