So is South Africa. It is just that SA is cheap to live in and with a remote US job, you have a much higher quality of life.

Last time the south Africans moved back because they didn’t find the American Society to be very livable by south African standards.

Which is saying a lot. America is a banana republic

What the article should have gone into in more detail is that this is utter nonsense, and that there are plenty of population groups across the world that are facing actual persecution, but of course that’s of no interest at all to the MAGA crowd.

I think it’s fun to imagine there are only a few hundred freaks with persecution complexes and then thousands of normal people with normal reasons to move who are like ‘well this is extremely embarrassing to be associated with but this is super convenient for getting my visa’

I’ve got a friend working on this process right now. He openly admitted to me that the premise is fucked up and there are far more deserving populations that should be let in, but the simple fact is,he would be an absolute moron to pass up this opportunity for him and his family. It’s a fast track to the place he wants to be and provides better futures for his children. Why wouldn’t you take the free ticket?

Some of the people here on lemmy forget their humanity sometimes.

The fact is, that is attributed falsely to the end of apartheid by racists, South Africa is a very corrupt single party state; and getting worse since the 2008 recession. Despite the issues America is having at the moment; a lot of people still want to move there by contrast. So as was said; a large portion of the people being admitted are probably not lunatics.

Has anyone actually run into any of these South Africans? Are they giving them housing on military bases or are there Africa towns popping up in the middle of nowhere or something?

These people are all white, so looking for an “Africa town” is head in the sand behavior. You’ll know you’ve met one of these people when they start talking about White Genocide with a Dutch accent.

This is basically a program for people like Elon Musk (rich Afrikaners with generational wealth), to give them a fast-track to US citizenship by pretending they’re being persecuted.

They are dragging in the old slave owners of South Africa who are being ‘oppressed’ by their former slaves.

There was already a story about some of the South African refugees going back because they felt the same way.

Did he already admit the 10,000 from like a few weeks ago? That must be a record in refugee admission rates.
