Quite soon it will Wimblon and will rain and people will say they’ve never seen the like before and Cliff Richard will be wheeled out to croak “Summer Holiday”.

Has me wondering how I can cool my house cheaply, overnight only dropped 0.5c on the thermostat. It only warmed up 2c during the day yesterday but I need to be able to get rid of that heat somehow for the next day!

Open a window in one room and point a fan out of it a couple of feet away, then open all windows in other rooms. This pushes all the hot air out while drawing in to cool night air. I also pointed another fan into the room with the first fan to help with airflow.

Living room only has a single small window that can be opened, and we can’t open it much overnight as we have an indoor cat.

Shut him out of the back of the house last night and opened those windows more and damn those feel cooler right now. But they heat up a lot in the afternoon while the living room is throughout the day the best at keeping out the heat. Just more difficult to remove heat from… Also with a pretty big aquarium it’s probably got a massive thermal mass from all that water.

Think we need to look into some kind of cat proof window covers. Ideally for 2 windows to get some airflow through the living room and some other room of the house. Chicken wire might be a fairly cheap option and I could do with getting some for other projects too.

I left a fan on one Summer having no clue how expensive they were (are?) to run. I thought the electric company made a mistake when my bill came, long story short they hadn’t :(

I didn’t even get the usual evening breeze last two nights to cool my room down. I had to keep a wet sheet over my legs and I still felt hot. I’ve got foil on my windows and one of those car windscreen mylar things but since it’s supposed to be flush with the windows and I have those annoying upvc monstrosities I wonder if it’s not just trapping heat instead. For some reason the hot air really wants to stay in my room. Even with the door open and a through current to the front of the house which is north facing. There’s a big difference in heat the moment you step through my doorway 😭😭

Aim a fan in/out a window to increase airflow.

Aim a fan at yourself. That’ll increase wind chill.

If you have multiple levels (e.g. a house) open a window downstairs and one upstairs. The rising hot air inside will draw in cooler air from outside, but the hot air needs to be able to escape. If you power that with a fan, that’s good too.

I’ve tried that, it doesn’t work. I must have a secret furnace in my room somewhere. Once it gets to about 9 or 10 am it’s better with the window closed and the door open, since the hallway always feels a lot cooler. Eventually there’ll be a breeze that will run from the north side of the house to my room and that will cool things down. In the meantime, a spray bottle and fan are my best friends for the next few days.
