10·2 days agoThere is a little bit of video in there of the car going quite fast, but the guy seems to mostly be filming the seat and the floor, so you only glimpse movement out of the window for a moment or two.

Technology@lemmy.world•Canada vows to amend Bill C-22's encryption and metadata rules amid massive tech backlashEnglish
492·6 days agoThe Liberals are determined to turn Canada into a surveillance state and share data with other “eyes” countries including the USA. This government is not looking to protect Canadians. And they haven’t taken the objections on board, as evidenced by their statements that they need to “define” encryption, and that “the new amendments will aim to align the bill’s encryption provisions with US counterparts.” How can you look at all the history of the USA spying on its own citizens and think “Yep, Canada should copy that”? Not a government that’s serving Canadians.

News@lemmy.world•The world’s largest data center was supposed to run on 100% natural gas. Utah’s Republican governor says ‘never.’
7·6 days agoIt’s surprising that he’s actually demanding renewables, but then “The very first phase will be natural gas” is exactly what you’d say if you had no real intention of ever getting it past phase one. It could be just words, designed to break down opposition. Hopefully it isn’t.

931·10 days ago“These graduates are actually both going to be a big part of driving that progress and also dealing with the impact,” he added, referring to AI.
Out of context it sounds like a threat, but in connect it just sounds like vacuous CEO-speak, designed to respond to the question with some words while not actually answering the question.

Some of us would strongly disagree with this fundamental premise of yours. You state it like it’s a solid basis on which these matters should be debated, but it’s actually a controversial point that could only emerge as the conclusion of an argument. It needs justification at least.

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Five toys on sale in Britain found to contain asbestos in tests for GuardianEnglish
8·11 days agoRetailers have criticised the UK’s product safety policy, which relies on manufacturers and importers to ensure that products are safe. Post-Brexit health and safety laws have removed powers to ban products thought to pose a health hazard without waiting for scientific evidence. Instead, the onus is on exporters, importers and retailers to test goods and inform regulators if asbestos is found.
Another Brexit benefit. Of course the people profiting from selling these things will do the responsible thing, spending money to test them for safety and choosing not to profit from them if they don’t pass tests. That’s how it always works.

231·15 days agoIt’s important to welcome people leaving cults, no matter how dumb it looks that they were in the cult in the first place. The main reason they were there is community, and if they don’t find a welcoming community outside, they’ll go right back in.

Yes you almost certainly can. It’s less painful than you might imagine. I used Gmail since it was launched, and now that account is unused except for a couple of mailing lists I don’t care about. It just takes a bit of time, but you can do it bit by bit.
