Things like this fall under the category of soft power, and the current crop of Republican leadership don’t understand that. Doing good deeds like this around the world ultimately come back to propping up the US economy, and keeping the lines pointing up. The current leadership doesn’t understand the need for this. They believe “American Exceptionalism” is self-perpetuating. They also see all that money going to “shithole countries” instead of theirs and their buddies’ pockets as a Very Bad Thing. Lines going up doesn’t matter unless they get their taste, and they’re too stupid to think of smarter methods of corruption.

Despite that, agreed. Canada seems to “get it” with regards to the US. If Trump and friends want to behave like adults, they come to the table. If not, they’re just going to isolate them further. Eventually the US will “American Exceptionalism” itself right into a corner all by its lonesome little self. Then all that debt will really start to hurt.

I’ve always felt there was a difference between people like McConnell and ones like the current crop of Republicans (Trump, Boebert, MTG, etc.). McConnell knew that US soft power as incredibly powerful, and that the dollar being the global reserve currency massively props up the US economy. They built this myth of “American Exceptionalism” to explain why we have it so great when it was these boring things that made that myth possible. Basically, they toed the line of selling the lie while never intending to do anything about those “government handouts” that helped perpetuate their myth.

This new breed sees the myth as dogma. They think the US is actually a gift to the world, ordained by God Himself. They don’t understand soft power, or how reserve currencies work, so they don’t understand what gutting programs like USAid actually does. They literally believe American Exceptionalism is just a fact of the world without understanding why, other than “we’re number 1.” It was always going to happen. The Republicans did this to themselves, and the country.

This right here is the answer. Plus, that low primary turnout is more likely to be composed of the diehards, so angry MAGA in this case. My hope is that some of those primary wins come back to bite the party in the ass in the elections, but I’m not holding my breath. So far, this country seems to prefer Trump’s bullshit chaos to whatever brand of “progressive” the Democrats are propping up. Sad thing is if the Dems do actually win big in November, they will take it as a sign that their milquetoast corporate-owned liberals are what the country wants, rather than just voting against the fascist racists they are running against.

Meanwhile the US is over there in the corner with a bag over its head screaming, “It’s not real! Line must go up!”

A lot of optimism in this speech, but if it was all negative, we wouldn’t be talking about it. Personally, I see MAGA as a reinvigorated Confederacy. If we’ve learned anything from them, it’s that hatred and racism don’t die, they just wait for the right time. Some amount of people (and sometimes a shocking amount) will always flock to the party of simple solutions that points to a Bad Guy as the root of their problems.
