They didn’t care because all it takes is a threat to what little middle class people actually have for some fast talker to come in and tell them how he’ll protect that from the people (like him) that plan to take it. Oh, that and the threat of people who don’t speak the language the middle class speaks coming to take their jobs/children/money/daughters/religion/freedoms.
