Of course. This is targeted at the people who don’t know about the alternatives already. Just like telling reddit people about lemmy, but it’s pointless to tell lemmy people about it when they’re already here.

Hopefully when the alternatives start gaining traction then things worth sharing will start turning up there. The irony isn’t lost on me, though. In this case I found the channel through YT and thought it worth sharing. It’s also ironic that the YT algorithm suggested it to me 😄

We should’ve done what Brave does: mirror every video on YouTube to the Fediverse version. If creators want revenue, they have to sign up with our platform/s

I’m not convinced that there ever can be a real alternative to YouTube. Sure there are other video delivery platforms on the Internet, but nothing with the depth and breadth of content. We’re talking about more than 20 years of video uploads - it’s a historical archive. In the same vein, there is no alternative to AtomFilms, because most of the content that was there is now inaccessible.

True. And, frustratingly, it’s a 20 year digital archive that’s in the care of a single for-profit corporation. At least if it was a federated platform the archive would be spread about without a single entity having full control.

Haven’t watched the vid because I can’t atm.

But Olvid, the Whatsapp alternative has AGPl clients but proprietary server code. Not good. Maybe go with Matrix or Threema?

Monnett, the social media app seems to be closed source, so even likelier to become enshittificated like Twitter than Bluesky.

I don’t see why you’d ever go with something closed source if FOSS exists. Because that at least you could just fork if you really need to not have ties to the US or whatever. I’d choose Signal over a proprietary European chat app any day.
